Hiroshi Iizuka, born in 1946, studied first in Tokyo and then in Mittenwald, where he won a diploma from the German Chamber of Handwork (1974). He won VSA gold medals in 1976 and 1994. His instruments have been played in the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Berlin Philharmonic and many string quartets. He is perhaps best known for his large, unusually shaped violas based on original designs. Michael Tree of the Guarneri String Quartet has owned several Iizuka instruments.
